Steel Imports for April Show Decrease

On 25 May 2023, The US Census Bureau released their preliminary report on April Steel imports to the US showing an overall decrease in imported steel products. The preliminary numbers show a decrease in steel imports from 2.4 million metric tons in March 2023 to 2.2 million metric tons in April 2023.

The April change in steel imports is reflected in a decrease in blooms, billets, and slabs despite increases in reinforcing bars, heavy structural shapes, and standard rails. Decreases occurred primarily with Brazil. Increases occurred primarily with Italy, Netherlands, and Germany.

The year-to-date final statistics through March 2023 showed steel imports of 6.8 million metric tons compared with 7.7 million metric tons through March 2022. The largest commodity decreases occurred primarily in hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip. Increases occurred with oil country goods.

The largest country decreases occurred primarily with Mexico. Increases occurred with Brazil.
